I Want to Know You

“I know you” is a collaborative participatory art project that focuses on portraits. “it is a natural human reaction to form an idea of a person even before [he] she speaks. Just by looking at you”(Elkins, 2014). I always think about times when we see a total stranger in the street passing by, for a second, even shorter than a second, for an instant, we may feel something about them or we may want to say something to them. But in no time, even before thinking about the probable sentence, they would have passed by us and gone away but their face and form would remain with us for a while. Proust describes this exact experience in À la Recherche du Temps Perdu as the narrator recounts his vision of the girls from the windows of the train or Mme de Villeparisis ’s carriage.
By participating in this project you have the opportunity to see strangers and if you feel something about any of them, to say something to them. This time you are not going to miss the feeling. You may also receive some messages. I believe connection remotely, even virtually, could be a helpful experience. Isn’t it exciting to receive messages from unfamiliar persons?
The first part of this project has been done by collaborating artists Kiana and I. In the second phase, you are invited to look at these photos and choose one of them, open the selected photo on a screen (could be a tablet, smartphone) hold it, take a photo of yourself with this photo, and then write a message to the person in the photo. Finally, take another photo of yourself in the same style (without a smile and looking directly to the camera). Then send both photos and the message together to me. I will upload the photo of you and the other person and your message under the photos of the selected person. I will also put the photo of just you on this page to be seen by others.
